As part of regular annual maintenance, Utility staff will be flushing the water mains by opening hydrants throughout the entire Rockford water system.
Flushing the distribution system is done twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall to verify fire flows and operations of all hydrants. During flushing, water moves through the mains at a high speed which is done to loosen any deposits within the system. Flushing stirs up sediment in the mains and is then flushed out of the system to maintain water quality.
